Preserve Water, Protect Rights
Much has been done over the past many years to protect the Great Lakes. Most notable is passage of the Great Lakes Compact in 2008, which protects the Lakes from large scale diversions. There remains, however, work to be done pertaining to the public trust doctrine, which was put in place to protect the Great Lakes and Michigan's surface water for generations to come.
Leaders in the state House and the environmental community are working to reverse recent court decisions that have put the protection of Michigan's groundwater in question.
In the January 26th edition of the Traverse City Record Eagle, Representative Dan Scripps laid out some very compelling reasons why Michigan should adopt a plan to protect private property rights and preserve our waters for the use and enjoyment of future generations.
