Evidence Mounts Linking Toxics to Health Problems
Michigan LCV Education Fund is a member of the Michigan Network for Children’s Environmental Health and has been working consistently with allies over the last few years on the Healthy Kids, Healthy Michigan campaign. This campaign is focused on a variety of issues affecting children’s health, and considerable emphasis has been put on addressing the problem of exposure to toxic substances during childhood development.
Last year, great progress was made in the Michigan House of Representatives with the passage of the Children’s Safe Products Act, regulations on use of the neurotoxin Lindane, and a ban on the toxic chemical deca-BDE. All of these bills were focused on providing parents with information about the exposure risks to toxic chemicals their children face and also banning certain substances that are known to be harmful to humans. Unfortunately, all of these bills have stalled in the Senate for completely political reasons. This is incredibly disappointing, especially considering new studies and evidence that is surfacing linking toxic exposure to a host of developmental problems, the most recent of which is autism. Please read a recent New York Times editorial highlighting the issue.
