Dr. Joe Schwarz Urges Senators to Support Safe Chemicals Act
Dr. Joe Schwarz, a physician, former U.S. Congressman and current Michigan LCV Board Member, wrote an excellent and well-reasoned editorial in the Grand Rapids Press which urged Michigan's Senators to support the Safe Chemicals Act.
As Dr. Schwarz explained, the current law governing toxic chemical licensing - the Toxic Substances Control Act of 1976 - has allowed 80,000 chemicals on the market without adequate safety testing, and the act itself has never been seriously reformed. He analogized that doctors still practicing 1976 medicine without keeping up with current practices would have their licenses revoked.
The Safe Chemicals Act would be the first major overhaul of the TSCA and require manufacturers of toxic substances to supply the EPA with health risk information for all of those substances so that we can adequetely monitor, respond to, and protect against harmful toxic chemicals in our products, our environment, and our bodies.
