Background & Resources
Michigan spends nearly $20 billion annually importing energy from out of state. This tremendous drain on our economy—approximately $2,000 per Michigan resident—is contributing to our current economic crisis.
While Michigan has significant untapped renewable energy resources—we rank 2nd in the region in wind generation potential—nearly all of our energy comes from imported, dirty and nonrenewable sources: 63 percent from coal, 23 percent from nuclear, 10 percent from natural gas and only 3 percent from renewable sources.
Michigan needs to set the bar high to catch up with neighboring states that are already benefiting from job creation and cleaner air as a result of Renewable Energy Standards. Michigan can, and should, become a leader in renewable energy and move toward a New Energy Future, a cleaner environment, and a better economy. This will only happen if leadership makes a bold commitment to renewable energy and a smarter energy path now.
