Great Lakes Compact & Great Lakes Restoration Efforts
The Great Lakes are essential to the economic and cultural identity of our region. Forty-two million people depend on the Great Lakes for their drinking water. Today, the health of our Lakes is seriously threatened by problems such as untreated sewage and invasive species.
The time to restore and conserve the Great Lakes is NOW. Every day we wait, the problems get worse and the solutions get more costly. We must act now to protect and restore the health of the Great Lakes.

Great Lakes Compact
This year, the state legislature is expected to review and debate passage of The Great Lakes – St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact, part of the Great Lakes Charter Annex 2001. The Compact is an agreement among the eight US Great Lake states to prevent diversions and withdrawals that would harm the ecosystem created by the waters of the Great Lakes. It is rooted in history and a long tradition of managing the Great Lakes cooperatively.
A package of bills was introduced in the Michigan House of Representatives (HB 4343, 5065-5073) that will bring Michigan into compliance with the Great Lakes Compact. This package of bills must pass to fully protect our state’s most precious resource. At the same time, Senate Republicans also introduced legislation (S.B. 212, 858, 859, 860) to bring Michigan into compliance with the Compact. There are a number of differences in this bill package; namely, a few key points for water protection are left out.
